No Mother's Day

The statistics in this video just break my heart.

Edited to add: For Mother's Day this year, I've asked my family to consider supporting Every Mother Counts by making a donation or giving me Every Mother Counts 2012 - a compilation album that looks fantastic (and has Diana Krall singing Don't Fence Me In!!).

Jeni's right - keeping silent on Mother's Day won't save any of those young women from dying in child birth, but even a small donation CAN save a life.

  1. We will be celebrating Mother's Day. I understand the awareness-raising sentiment, but it rings hollow. My "disappearing" for one day will in no way lessen another grieving family's sorrow and it frankly smacks of a profound egocentrism -- on the part of the originators, not you, Jaimie -- to suggest that one more Dooceless day will change the world. Yes, yes, I know it is meant to generate discussion. Kony 2012, anyone? Let us honour these lost mothers EVERY day and not feel guilty for eating pancakes in bed on Sunday.

  2. You're right, of course, Jeni. Fake disappearing for a day won't help anyone, but a donation to Every Mother Counts in lieu of a Mother's Day gift COULD change the world for a teenaged girl who might otherwise die in childbirth.

    1. Exaaaactly. It's sad that EMC feels like it needs to resort to these kinds of tactics to garner media attention (indeed, it is sad that they DO need to resort to these kinds of tactics). The compilation album is a *fantastic* idea.
